DEJANA SEKULIC - VIOLIN - TEMPORALITY OF THE IMPOSSIBLE

Description

”Temporality of the Impossible: contemporary violin music, aesthetics, technique and performance” is an artistic research, that started as a personal curiosity but grew into a PhD research, now taking place at the CeReNeM and HuCPeR, at the University of Huddersfield (UK).

**ABSTRACT: ”How impossible is the “impossible”? The lasting curiosity of composers in exploring continues the legacy of creating music that is fresh, “new” and challenging not only for listening, but also to artistry of playing. Subsequently, performers continue to be challenged by these pieces demanding unconventional approaches. “Temporality of the Impossible” focuses on these challenges, and addresses two important and inseparable parts of music and performance: the tangible and the abstract. While the former investigates challenges of the extended violin techniques and the notation, the latter investigates the shaping of sensibility for understanding the music. Questioning what is this “impossible” and how do we overcome it by finding remedies for technical “unplayability”, the aim of this research is to simultaneously seek out ways for reshaping the understanding for the “new” aesthetics and expressivity, and whether and how we grow into appreciating this “unconventional”.”**

In the season 2017/2018 “Temporality of the Impossible: Performance+Talk Sessions” will mostly explore aesthetics of sound, from bare audibility to various overpressure and everything in between, as well as music for prepared violin/bow.

Program for the “Performance+Talk Sessions#5”, taking place on Sunday January 7th, will be mostly dedicated to prepared violin/bow, and will include pieces from Wojtek Blecharz, Clara Iannotta, John King, Kilir Markan, as well as selections from Salvatore Sciarrino’s “Sei Capricci” and John Cage’s “Freeman Etudes”, and Helmuth Lachenmann’s “Toccatina”.

Program for the “Performance+Talk Sessions#7”, taking place on Sunday April 15th, will feature pieces of Brian Ferneyhough, Aaron Cassidy, Samuel Cedillo, as well as selections from Salvatore Sciarrino’s “Sei Capricci” and John Cage’s “Freeman Etudes”, and Helmuth Lachenmann’s “Toccatina”.
