Text

Sitar and surbahar player Bert Cornelis is an institute of Indian music in Brussels. He follows a life-long Guru-Sisha training with the famous Master Pandit Ashok Pathak since more then 15 years, and completed academic studies at the Prayag Samiti University for classical music in India. The Pathak 'Gharana' (style) is famous for the mastering of both of the 2 major Indian classical music styles Khyal and Dhrupad, and for playing both the sitar and the surbahar. The surbahar is the 'grandfather' of the sitar, since many centuries played in the Dhrupad style.
Bert will present his surbahar playing for the first time in Brussels for this concert.
Pandit Udhav Apegaonkar Shinde (pakhawaj) is the son of the legendary Padmashree Bapu Apegaonkar. He is one of very few artists in the  world to have mastered this ancient instrument. He is much applauded for his solo work as well as accompanying the greatest Dhrupad masters. Last years, Udhav Shinde invited Bert Cornelis several times to Maharastra in India for a series of concerts. During these tours they played in the unique combination of sitar and pakhawaj. One concert was attended by 15 thousand spectators and relayed from Mumbai by Indian national media and television. They now present their jugalbandi(Indian classical music duet) in Brussels.
