Description"Vagues" (waves) have a steady rhythmic flow which, at times, can be both peaceful and enjoyable but, at other times, also fierce and strong. So too does this concert program which combines delicately intricate passages of pure chamber music that literally resonates inside the body at full force. The works by Hoffmann and Maslanka have very little to do with each other and are aesthetically very different; however, they are both part of the same ferociously intense wave. The works by Dayer and Desenclos on the other hand are more delicate, aesthetically speaking, even though they both push tonal boundaries in diverse ways. Wanamaker and Clift each highlight intricate sound cells in different ways. For Clift, repeated figures and motives play a large part in painting a minimalist portrait; however, in Wanamaker’s work a unified quartet acts as a solid resonating body which eventually splits in four ways, eventually working its way slowly back to a common one sound.
EBM is proud to present the many facets of the modern saxophone quartet and, in doing so, bring to life new works for the ensemble. Three of the works on tonight's program, the Wanamaker, Dayer, and Clift, were commissioned by EBM for a new CD, entitled BREACH, which will be released sometime early next year.
