Description

Kristi Stassinopoulou: voice, Indian harmonium, bendir frame drum
Stathis Kalyviotis:  Greek laouto in live-looping and electronics

Kristi and Stathis present songs from their recent album titled Nyn (no 1 in the Transglobal World Music Charts, Oct 2016/ no 2 in the World Music Charts Europe, Nov 2016) as well as songs from their previous albums Greekadelia, Taxidoscopio, The Secrets of the Rocks, Echotropia and Ifantokosmos.
----------------------
“From a Greek nation battered and scarred by the Euro crisis, Kristi and Stathis offer a personal and philosophical response, rooted in nature, the elemental, and the “now” (“nyn” in Ancient Greek). Lyrically poetic (English lyrics included), these are songs of beauty and transcendence, and the electro-acoustic settings range from cicada rhythms to gamelan samples to driving riffs. The root is Greek folk music, but times are too desperate and challenging to fall back on old tropes. Greekadelia was the title of their previous album, and it well applies here in the distorted lauto, the looped guitar, and the Indian harmonium. Kristi’s voice resonates with the spirits of a departed folk-rock generation but with rich inflections from further East. Contemporary folk music for troubled times.” Nigel Wood, The Irish Times

Singer and lyricist Kristi Stassinopoulou, a native Athenian, active on Greece's alternative music scene for many years, and her long time collaborator, composer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Stathis Kalyviotis, former of the first Greek punk group in the early 80s, are touring the world with their music. They have made together 6 albums that generated a wide appeal in the international world music circuit and reached high positions in the European and the Transglobal World Music Radio Charts.
The unique and interesting blend of traditional Greek rhythms, ambience and electronica, Stathis’ genuine use of the live-looping technique on his traditional lauto, combined with Kristi’s vivid scenic appearance and haunting vocal improvisations have led to appearances in important venues, radio concerts and music festivals all around the world.
The melodies of the songs draw inspiration from Greek demotika &  rebetika songs and modal Byzantine chanting.

The lyrics of the songs speak about a range of themes: Stories of bands on-the-road, stories about refugees passing through Greece, life in faraway Greek islands, ancient sun-worshiping rituals and shamanic practices still alive in certain areas of the Balkan Peninsula the “newness” of the Greek situation.
