DescriptionAlice Van Leuven, violin
Katsura Mizumoto, piano Ludwig van Beethoven- violin sonata n°4 in a minor(18'): presto, andante scherzoso piu allegretto, allegro molto Leos Janacek- violin sonata (17'): Con moto, Ballada, Allegretto, Finale Richard Strauss- violin sonata in E-flat Major (30’): Allegro ma non troppo, improvisation andante cantabile, finale andante-allegro This contrasted program starts with the fourth violin sonata from Beethoven, a work written in the classical style but that already carries a grabbing and agitated touch, the so-called « Sturm und Drang ». Then comes Janacek, a piece that was written in 1914 and that brings us into Janacek’s mindset at the eve of the first world war. We can already hear some of the violence and despair interrupting the popular melodies from the Moravian region. The concert ends with Strauss’ violin sonata, an early work from the composer. It is one of the rare works from his chamber music repertoire. Nevertheless, the sonata measures itself to the symphonic scale by its density and colors. It is an optimistic work, very romantic, virtuoso with a touch of humor that the composer will use later in other compositions like his symphonic poem « Till Eulenspiegel lustige Streiche ».
