DescriptionGiorgis Xylouris presents the solo performance "HOMA".
With his lute and his voice, he seeks traces along the path where both folk Cretan music and the avant-garde influences of independent expression have settled in his very personal language. Life is an endless sequence. A concert is the same. It's a small life. Impressions, sensations, feelings, towards what is happening, give birth on the spot to a world that is all music. These moments of transcendence and self-discovery are the language that transforms the world I live in. It allows me to lose myself, to become someone who is born, lives, and desires with intensity within the same piece that is heard. I'm excited by the idea that when I lose a part of myself, I'm playing for the world to be reborn. I seek to delve deeper into the music and rhythmic forms that predate western metrics. I come from a musical tradition, the cretan, rooted far back in a world in which knowledge and perception of reality differed greatly from today's. But I sense that there is something that transcends all that distance in time and that “something” is what I am really looking for. It has to do with the fact that I consider sounds and silences in music a preverbal state of a statement, an almost mystical secret, a revealing wisdom. And the musical instrument in this sense keeps, expresses and transfers that wisdom when it is played. "Homa" is a work born from an instinctive and mature desire to pay tribute and to inscribe in an authentic way in the tradition of Cretan music that was bequeathed to me. I seek with deep admiration, respect and simplicity the sounds which constitute the root of Cretan traditional music and bridge the musical legacies of the Mediterrane- an. “Homa”, translated as "Dirt" , is the ground, the earth. It unites us, allows us to walk, cultivate and dance on it. It is always below and available to us. It's a natural and raw amalgam, unadulterated, unadorned, unpretentious, it has no authorship, it belongs to everyone. How to deliver a very personal music that belongs and vibrates to everyone becomes the heart of my quest for this album.
