MAKAM TRIO: OTTOMAN AND TURKISH CLASSICAL MUSIC

Description

Makam Trio offers a unique musical experience that bridges the rich
tradition of Ottoman and Turkish classical music with contemporary
interpretation and improvisation. With the enchanting sound of the ney,
the deep resonance of the oud, and the subtle accompaniment of
percussion, the trio invites the audience on a spiritual journey through
the ancient makams — modal systems in Turkish classical music
characterized by microtonal intervals, nuanced melodic progression, and
expressive contours that evoke distinct emotional and aesthetic atmospheres.
Makam Trio began as a duo, arising from the musical encounter between
Mevlüt Akgüngör (ney and tanbur) and Robert Micin (oud). Along with
Hilde De Clercq (percussion and vocals), they perform pieces from the
vast repertoire of Turkish classical and mystic Sufi music, including
taksims, peshrevs, ilahis, and sazsemais, but also contemporary
compositions in various makams.
The three musicians, each a master of their craft, share a passion for
authentic expression and musical dialogue. Their interplay is refined,
meditative, and captivating, appealing to both connoisseurs and new
listeners alike.

Mevlüt Akgüngör : ney, tanbur
