Description
| "A man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can afford to let alone", wrote Thoreau. There is only a thin line between that richness and the state of mind we would call lethargy. But doing nothing is no art. Cedric Vandenbossche observes the world around him, looking for immobility, for stillness. Fascinated by decay in beauty, or beauty in decay, he's searching for places that people seem to have fled, leaving them temporarily unattended. Whether or not the artist has been an intruder is not certain. We tend to look at it this way: that what has once been valuable for some will once turn into rubbish for all. But is that truly so? These paintings suggest a state of return. There is an undeniable suspense here, and yet there is no story. Cedric Vandenbossche leads people to places where he says never to have been. Supposedly, he has left them for others to find. |
